      • Introduction

The initial journey of R. Vaadhoo School began more than 60 years ago, when it was opened as an elementary academy. Back then the building was constructed using wood and thatch and located in a local building,(Alivaage). The modest building was fiercely damaged due to extreme weather. The institution was relocated during the reign of Sultan Mohammed Fareedh in the 1960s, to a new local building next to Finivaage. When these developments were carried out the Island Chief was Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, Chaandhanyvila.

In 1979, during the presidency of his Excellency Maumoon Ab.Gayoom, the school was renamed and registered as,”Madharusathul Sa Aa’dhaa”. The school was renamed again on 20 May 1980 to “Makuthabu”. The school kept operating at the exact location till 1984.In 1984 an American non-government organisation known as IHAP, funded and developed a new building at a new location (which is where the school is currently located). Building work was initiated by the island head and the school operator at the time, Mr Ahmed Mohammed Ibrahim as a Naazir.

Teaching was carried out by several hard working teachers, who were mostly from the Raa Atoll. The very first primary teacher of Raa Vaadhoo School was a native of Vaadhoo , Mr Ahmed Dhaud. He started teaching in 1985, to grade 1 and 3. Ascending grades were introduced slowly until 1999, when grade 6 was introduced. In the same year grade 7 was introduced. After 5 years, in 2005 the school was converted to a government institution. In 2006 secondary education was introduced. The first batch of students who participated in the Cambridge international exams took the exam in 2008, which was an immense milestone for the school.
